Gerard's Brown Elk Hair Stone Fly (BEHS) - 2008 First I wrap brown dubbing half way up the shank of a 2X long size 14 hook. Third I wrap the hackle several times up to the front and tie off. Fourth I trim the hackle on top flat or almost flat.
This is a simple fly I tied after seeing small brown stone flies at Plum Creek back in May. I probably caught 90% of my fish this year on this fly. Here’s how I make it.

Second I tie on a piece of grizzly or brown hackle at the front of the dubbing and then wrap dubbing the rest of the way up leaving a space for the elk hair.

Lastly I tie on dark elk hair slightly longer than the hook and then I trim the belly hackle flattish to create legs sticking straight out sideways.
That’s it. Just make sure it’s floating upright, if it’s on its side you’ll get hits but no hookups.
